CloverEats: Chela’s in Ann Arbor
I first head about Chela’s Restaurant and Taqueria in this article about the Top Five Menus to try during Restaurant Week. However, when I went during the most recent Restaurant Week, I was informed that they weren’t participating this year; we ended up going to Seva that evening because Fred loved their mole enchiladas so much. More recently, they were picked as the second best tacos in all of Michigan, so I had to visit again, this time to actually eat some tacos.
Located in a humble strip mall on the west side of Ann Arbor, Chela’s was packed and bustling with activity on the night we visited. Colorful flags hung outside the restaurant, and inside, more colorful paper-cuttings were strung from the ceilings. We wanted to sample their menu thoroughly, and because the prices were so reasonable, ended up ordering quite a big meal. Originally, we wanted our order to-go, but everything looked and smelled so good that we sat down and started eating right there in the restaurant.
Reviews cite their fish tacos as being their best offering, but I actually preferred their quesadillas, which were absolutely loaded with cheese. Their horchata was refreshing, and their strawberry tamale was a delicious treat, tasting like a more wholesome, corn version of a poptart. I also really enjoyed the pickled carrots that came with their tacos! The staff was friendly, our food was served up very promptly, and the tacos were tasty!
