Don’t judge a book by its cover: a Snapshot of Chef in Ypsilanti

IMG_7402
Our team’s pharmacist recommended Chef to me a few weeks ago, but it wasn’t until recently that I got to go. I originally tried to go to Thai-Thai on a Sunday afternoon (their Facebook and Yelp pages say they started staying open on Sundays), only to find that they were actually closed. Starving, I opened up Yelp and saw the 4.5 stars that Chef got, and remembered the original recommendation. We drove only five minutes from Thai-Thai to get there, and honestly, were a little worried at its run-down exterior in a sketchy little strip mall. However, the food was amazing, and definitely made me glad I didn’t skip it over just because of how it looked. (more…)

CloverEats: Pilar’s Tamales in Ann Arbor

PilarsTamales-2

Pilar’s Tamales was high on my list of places to eat before leaving AA.  We didn’t realize they closed at 7, and so stopped by at 6:55.  Whoops and sorry!  However, Sylvia, the owner, welcomed us and said she was ‘happy to feed [us]’!  She was so nice and friendly, even though we showed up right before closing! CloverVisits: Keyhole in Mackinaw

Keyhole-5

We went up to Mackinaw to visit some key areas of Michigan before leaving.  It was a little cold still, and before the normal tourism season began, so a lot of places were closed.  We initially stopped in another place but there were so many bad reviews on Yelp that we left and went to Keyhole instead, which had a rocking 4 stars. CloverEats: Best China in Canton

BestChina-2

For a town with lots of Korean restaurants, it’s still hard to find a good Chinese restaurant in Ann Arbor.  We drove out to Canton to check out Best China, which has placemats boasting its status as one of the fifty best Chinese restaurants in the US.   (more…)

Snapshot: Tikkaway in New Haven

IMG_7207We stopped by Tikkaway while in New Haven after we saw the amazing reviews it got on Yelp – 4.5 stars! It’s bright and colorful.  I feel like a lot of these have been cropping up lately, Chipotle/Subway-style restaurants but with specific types of food, in this case, Indian. (more…)

CloverEats: Pitaziki in New Haven

As I’ve said before, I’m a huge fan of this crop of Chipotle-style restaurants that come in different flavors. Pitaziki is a Mediterranean version, and they serve up a quick and delicious meal!  This system is fast and customizable, which is great for picky eaters like myself. We got chicken shawarma and added lots of veggies and garlic. When we realized we had to get pita bread separately only after we had paid, they gave us a free toasted pita bread. How nice is that? We split the meal, which tasted delicious and really fresh. It’s a lighter meal that leaves you feeling full but not heavy or stuffed. I also indulged in a bottle of sweet mango nectar. Yum! I recommend getting the kabob and cauliflower, and lots of garlic sauce.  You can even order online! Check them out on Yelp or at their website!

CloverArts: Rivera and Kahlo at the Detroit Institute of Art, and Go!SyThai in Midtown

SyThai

Before leaving Michigan, I really wanted to visit the DIA.  What better time to go than now, when there is a special exhibit: Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo in Detroit, here until July 12.  After seeing drafts and sketches of the mural, it was especially amazing to go see the actual work in Rivera Court.  It’s way bigger than I thought it would be.  Afterwards, we took advantage of our location to get food! CloverEats: Prickly Pear in Ann Arbor

PricklyPear-2

When one of my coworkers mentioned that the mole at Prickly Pear was good, I knew we had to go. Despite having passed Prickly Pear many times, and loving the name, we didn’t get a chance to try it until just last week.  There’s only a few restaurants in Ann Arbor that we haven’t been to, and I’m trying to get to all of them before we leave this summer for Yale.  That’s right, Fred and I are headed to the east coast to New Haven!Yale_University_Logo
