Back in Evanston, I used to love going to the Mount Everest lunch buffet.  And while I love Shalimar’s lunch specials, I still haven’t found a lunch buffet to fill that empty spot in my heart and stomach.  Taste of India Suvai’s lunch buffet did come with tasty chai, and they had a nice assortment of dishes, but nothing with paneer!  I was sorely disappointed and only filled my plate with little bits of food, see above.  The service was prompt and attentive, and they let our large party put several tables together.  There are student discounts Monday through Thursday, but I just wasn’t that impressed with the food that I had.  How about it, Ann Arbor residents?  What is your favorite Indian lunch buffet?

CloverEats: bulgolgi cheesesteak at Broadway Cafe in Ann Arbor

For years, whenever I went to Broadway Cafe, I always just got bibimbop.  Then, one day, I tried the bulgolgi cheesesteak.  My goodness, never have I had such delicious cheesesteak.  The marinated bulgolgi flavors meshed perfectly with the cheese, the texture was superb, and the portion was huge.  Plus, the owners are always super nice and remind us to hold the takeout bag upright.  We sometimes run next door to Manna, the Korean grocery store, for some extra pickled radishes and Milkis.  Korean fusion for the win!  Check them out on Yelp!

Snapshot: delivery sushi from Miki!

We got delivery from Miki, and were really surprised with how nice they plated everything!  It was speedy too, only taking about one hour from order placement via Grubhub to our doorbell ringing.  Everything was super tasty, especially the Crazy Boy and New York Roll.  There was an extra delivery charge both at baseline and a percent of our order, so things came out to a rather expensive $60.  Also, I missed their hot towels.

Let me start off by admitting that I dislike fish.  In fact, besides sushi, I hate fish.  So admittedly, I was skeptical to try Monahan’s Seafood Market, despite the rave Yelp reviews.  However, now having gone, it’s like a whole new world has opened up to me.  How is it that a little joint tucked away in Kerrytown is able to provide such fresh goods?  There’s an interesting mix of disposable and classy, and I love the colorful decorations.  Despite the huge lunch rush, the service was quick and friendly.  The fish and chips were absolutely delicious, and I love the taste of malt vinegar.  The fish was cooked perfectly, and their sauce was somehow tastier than normal sauce.  Actually, even their lemons seemed juicier than normal lemons.  I’ll definitely be back!

I’ve never been much of a beer person, so I may be missing a big part of Jolly Pumpkin’s appeal.  However, the service was prompt and the food was pretty tasty, although a bit on the oily side.  They’ve taken some creative liberties with traditional pub fare, but nothing really blew the meal out of the water.  I did enjoy the thin, flavorful pickle that came with our meal.

We came here to celebrate Lunar New Year on Friday night, and even with the expected holiday rush, it was beyond crowded. We even ran into some of our friends dining here with their families! Every single table was packed, and there were groups of 15 still waiting in the entryway. Luckily, we had reservations, and so were seated promptly. Unfortunately, that was the only prompt part of the evening. All of the wait staff were running around, trying to take care of the huge parties. We ended up writing down our orders on a napkin, flagging someone down in the hallway, and putting our requests in that way. It also took some work to get water and drinks, and it took almost an hour before our first dish came out. Granted, the potstickers we ordered were amazingly delicious, but it took yet another twenty minutes before our second dish came out, which was also quickly demolished. I’m not sure if the kitchen was just really backed up, or if this was some devious ploy to maintain our hunger level and thus season the food with the sauce named starvation, but it got to be tiring after a while. To Ypbor Yan’s credit, everything was delicious and authentic! Make sure to come with someone who reads/writes/speaks Chinese, because my attempts at using Google Translate on the specials menu came out with some dish involving “bamboo wind furosemide hairpin pork”. The restaurant was at least courteous enough to cancel the rest of our dishes that apparently hadn’t even been cooked yet when we decided, after 3 hours, that we should probably head out. Also, it was ridiculously cheap: my cocktail was $3.25, and the whole meal, with gratuity included, was $11/person. Overall, we experienced less than optimal service, but it was the New Year, and the food was amazing. I’m desperate enough for good, authentic Chinese food that I’d be willing to come back some day when it’s not crowded, because these dishes were seriously bursting with flavor. CloverEats: Arirang in Ann Arbor

naemyun chop app ases tea

Naengmyun will always be one of my go-to foods.  It’s refreshing, crisp, sweet, and best of all, you’re allowed to add vinegar to it!  There’s nothing better at cleansing the palate after some hot, greasy barbeque.  It’s also great on hot summer days.  While you can get pre-packaged versions at grocery stores, the true dish takes a lot of work to make, and I never have all the toppings on hand.  Plus, I love all the banchan that come with a sit-down meal.  Arirang is a little far from downtown, but sometimes we’ll stop by if we’re shopping at Target. I usually don’t stray from my naengmyun, but friends have reported that their other dishes are quite good as well. Check them out on Yelp!

Everyone on Yelp raves about Cuatro’s spicy tuna nachos, and after our friends went and confirmed that they were, in fact, amazing, we decided we had to try them out for ourselves. The restaurant is small, and reservations are recommended, so we called ahead; I was taken aback at how snappy the man who took our reservations was, but decided to give it a shot anyway. Our actual waiter was much more pleasant, and of course, the nachos were fantastic. My only complaint is that while everything was delicious, it seemed that every dish was saturated with truffle oil, a flavor that quickly becomes overpowering. The menu is made up from the day’s fresh fish, which can be cooked in four different styles, House, Mauiterranean, Roasted Riviera, or Classic. We had four people dining, and so were able to try all four; I liked the Classic style best, although I thought our entrees paled in comparison with our appetizers. Although there’s a wine menu posted online, we were informed that the restaurant is BYOB with a $7 corkage fee; this seemed at odds with the upscale, romantic atmosphere, but there’s a Foodland located conveniently across the parking lot. Our coffee came in a French press, which was a nice touch. Overall, not the best experience, but I do have to give them credit for those amazing spicy tuna nachos!

Maybe it was the long day of hiking and swimming, but this was by far the best meal we had during our trip to Maui. This is a tiny tent-like structure in the middle of some trees, and when we initially drove by, we didn’t even realize it was a restaurant. They were technically closed by the time we stopped by, but the owner welcomed us in anyway. The green mango and fried opakapaka salad was the most amazing thing I have ever eaten. I don’t even know how anything could be so fresh and delicious. Everything else we ordered was also fantastic, but man, I wanted to brave the terrifying cliff-roads all the way back to Hana just for that one amazing salad.

As we walked out of the restaurant, we were met by a very vocal, tough-looking cat. The waiters explained that since his owner died, the restaurant has adopted him and named him Bear. He apparently acts as guard cat for the restaurant, and has the scars to prove it!

It seems that there is always a huge line when we come to Walker Brothers. Do not be daunted, for it moves swiftly and usually doesn’t come out to be more than twenty minutes. The decor is homey and bright, and the service is always quick and efficient. I love their fresh squeezed orange juice, and their coffee is tasty too. They are famous for their Apple Pancake, which is more of an apple pie than a pancake, and it while it never fails to disappoint, over the years I have come to prefer ordering their other, lesser known dishes. Plus, I can never eat more than a quarter of the Apple Pancake. Their potato pancakes are thin, crispy delights, and their bacon is always thick and delicious. I also have always liked the chocolate chippies. Most of the things are rather simple, but it’s a great deal price-wise and even across the several restaurants that have now opened, things are consistently good.
