Sharing restaurant experiences through photography!
To be honest, we had originally planned to check out Pepe’s, the rival pizzeria to Sally’s, but the line was so long we skipped it. Both are in the cute neighborhood of Wooster Square, just a few steps from each other. They go way back, and Sally’s was actually opened by Frank Pepe’s very own nephew. How’s that for drama? (more…)
It was a hot summer afternoon when we walked past Maison Mathis on Broadway. Patrons sipped from green drinks on the sidewalk outside. The sun was shining, and the idea of a healthy, cool juice was just too good to resist. We looked inside – the huge windows made it easy – and saw a variety of snacks too. We were on foot this particular day, but there’s a wedge-shaped lot in the middle of Broadway that visitors can park in. (more…)
Chao Chao (or is it House of Chao? Chao Restaurant and Wine Bar?) is a surprising authentic restaurant in an unexpectedly moody setting. It’s dark and sophisticated, and feels almost like an archive or basement, suited more to a speakeasy than a Chinese restaurant. Also, I’m not sure what makes this a wine bar, as we were offered neither a cocktail menu nor a wine list, although granted it was still early in the day. Service was again surprisingly top-notch, with speedy and attentive waiters and a manager who spoke Chinese. There’s even a menu in Mandarin, that’s how you know it’s legit. I got the Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup, recommended by our waiter as one of the most popular dishes on the menu. The beef and pickled cabbage were fantastic, but I wish the noodles were a little thicker and more flavorful. Fred got the Three Cup Chicken, which while I thought was delicious and smoky and savory, he found too fatty. We got a great side of house kimchi too. I’d definitely come back for the great food in an unexpected but lovely atmosphere. Check them out on Yelp or at their website!

Maui Burger – ground beef patty topped with pepper jack cheese, smoked applewood bacon, pickled red onion, grilled pineapple, romaine lettuce with chipotle mayo
There are days when I’ve had a really good workout (yay Fitocracy!), under my MyFitnessPal calorie goal, and all I want is a delicious burger to fill my belly. We stopped by Prime 16 because where there’s a name like that, there’s got to be good burgers. We weren’t disappointed. The Maui Burger, pictured above, was fantastic, so much so that although we’re usually pretty good about sharing, we were fighting for bites on this juicy baby. The interesting array of toppings were fun, and didn’t detract at all from the fantastic patty at the heart of the sandwich. (more…)

Burrata with house pickled vegetables and beet puree
We were handed a 15% off coupon to Crown Street Kitchen Bar, CSKB, while walking to Jeera Thai, and the two guys standing at the door were so cool and friendly that we decided to check it out. We did a quick glance at Yelp, where it somehow holds a 5 star ranking, and thought we were making a good decision. (more…)

Drunken Noodle – stir fried flat rice noodle, egg, chili, garlic, assorted vegetable and hot basil (duck, mock duck)
We walked by Jeera Thai a few times before, and finally decided to try it one day. It’s right across from a parking garage and only a couple minutes’ walk from our place. We liked it so much we ordered takeout from them several times in the next few days. (more…)
I’ve had amazing arepas from the Ay! Arepa food cart, and so was excited to check out the restaurant Rubamba. I think this experience confirms how big a difference presentation can make – just look at how beautiful the arepa looks above, plated so precisely! Compare that to the food cart version (separate post to come) below, which while delicious, doesn’t have nearly the same oomph.

Tofu Sumbat
Blanched bean sprouts and julienne cucumber stuffed in four tofu triangles served with a very spicy shrimp paste peanut sauce or with our mild or medium peanut sauce
We walked by Bentara the other day and were intrigued by the lights in the window. It’s a restaurant serving Malaysian food, which is something I’m not very familiar with, so we decided to try it out. It was pretty empty on a weekday evening, so we were seated immediately. There looked to be metered parking on the street outside. (more…)

After we had Curry on Crust, we went next door to NeeHee’s to check out what has been called some of the best Indian Street Food in southeast Michigan. The place was huge, with bright displays and buzzers, and it was packed, even late at night on a weekday. (more…)
